Karim Ben Salah: Malaz Capital


Karim Ben Salah Karim Ben Salah has 20 years of combined experience in operations management and private equity. He currently is Managing Director at Malaz Capital and Head of the Saudi SME Fund, a $265 million credit & equity fund focused on small and mid-cap companies in Saudi Arabia. The fund was launched in 2013 and is co-managed by Malaz Capital and Capitas Group.

Prior to that Karim was a principal at Intaj Capital I & II, a mid-cap private equity growth fund managed by Swicorp, investing in consumer-driven sectors with a diversified portfolio of 10 companies in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey. Karim has been with the Intaj fund since inception in 2006 and served on the board of portfolio companies.

Prior to moving into private equity in 2006, Karim had 13 years of operations management experience in the consumer products industry with Altria (formerly Philip Morris / Kraft Foods) in various developed and emerging markets, in Europe, US, Latin America and Middle East & Africa; most recently as a Director running regional operations, and marketing and sales organizations for the group.

Karim graduated from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). He speaks English, Arabic and French.

Samer SarrafSamer joined Amwal AlKhaleej in 2008. Prior to that Samer was a Senior Associate at Lehman Brothers, based in its London office as part of the Investment Banking Natural Resources Group, where he advised leading oil & gas and mining & metal companies on valuation and financing in the context of major M&As.

Samer was part of its global real estate group, where he led teams in the origination and analysis of commercial real estate loans, as well structuring of commercial mortgaged backed securities. Prior to Lehman, Samer had four years of experience in construction management with Batiment in France and Tahiti as well as one year of architecture in France with AART Farah Architects & Associates.

Samer sits on the boards of two Amwal portfolio companies, Right Angle Media and KSAM2 Petrodrill Ltd. Samer also sits on the executive committee of Dubai Contracting Company. Samer is also a co-founder and serves on the boards of BabyCord Jordan and FamilyCare Jordan.

Huda Al LawatiHuda Al Lawati has more than 10 years of experience in private equity and finance. At The Abraaj Group, she is a member of the investment team responsible for structuring, execution and post-acquisition management and monitoring of transactions across the private equity family of funds.

She has completed several transactions at The Abraaj Group, developing strong experience in a number of industries including oil & gas, shipping and healthcare. She has been leading The Abraaj Group’s oil and gas initiatives, including the acquisition of Viking oilfield services, and the Group’s investment in Kuwait Energy; worked on the acquisition of Acibadem; and she has been responsible for Stanford Marine Group since 2008.

Ms Al Lawati started her career in 2001 with Schlumberger in Muscat, Oman, where she managed the fiscal accounts and tax audits of its subsidiaries and branches in Oman. She joined ABQ Zawya in 2003, where she developed and implemented the business plan and strategy for a regionally focused online financial portal.

Haythem Macki Mr. Macki has over 23 years of experience in Banking, Corporate Finance and Management. He started his career back in 1991 with the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) in the Treasury & Investment Department. In 1998, Mr. Macki moved to Oman Arab Bank where he was in charge of the Investment Banking Division. Between 2001 and 2003, he held the position of Executive Director in Al Mawarid Securities Company in Oman, where in 2003 he was instrumental in making a tripartite merger with Al Mawarid Securities Co. and two other firms, which resulted in the formation of FinCorp, one of the leading investment banking firms of the country. Between 2003 and 2006, Mr Macki assumed the responsibility of Chief Executive Officer of FinCorp, before founding GrowthGate Partners, the GP that manages the business of the specialist buyout firm GrowthGate Capital.

Mr. Macki holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Arizona (USA).
